Brea Haller, a junior communication major with an emphasis on journalism and public relations and a minor in creative writing, has been awarded the Eugene S. Pulliam Internship.  Sponsored by the Hoosier State Press Association, Haller will have the opportunity to gain experience at the Terre Haute Tribune-Star through a 10-week paid internship in summer 2021.

Haller, from Tell City, Ind., has been the editor-in-chief of the Indiana Statesman since August 2020. She became a part of the Statesman her freshman year as a news and features reporter but after gaining confidence in her writing abilities she applied for her current position.

“I currently lead a team of 25-plus students and I feel as though I do a nice job doing so. I work hard and I complete all my tasks, and I love what I do!” Haller said. “Student Media has given me so many opportunities. I would not be the strong leader and writer that I am without that organization.”

Martha Milner, student publications director, said, “Brea has done very well at the Statesman and gracefully managed the paper during a particularly difficult year and will be an asset to any newsroom.”

In her future career, Haller hopes to stay somewhere in the journalism field doing writing and reporting but would love to dive into broadcast journalism as well. Haller is eager to start her internship. “The experience I will receive is going to help me immensely in my writing and reporting skills. I feel so incredibly blessed to be chosen and I will work hard to be a great intern!”

“The program will allow her to utilize what she has learned at Indiana State in a real newsroom. She will also receive experience that will be invaluable to her future job search,” Milner said.
