After a 31-9 victory over Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs on Sunday night, Tom Brady now has more Super Bowl wins than any quarterback in the NFL franchise. Going into the game, Brady was tied with the Pittsburgh Steelers and New England Patriots, Brady’s former team, with six Super Bowl victories. But, after a game that ended with Brady winning his fifth Super Bowl MVP, even Colts fans and Joe Montana fans must admit he is the undisputed GOAT now.
It was obvious from the start that the Chiefs’ offensive line, riddled with injuries, thrusting backups into starting roles on the biggest stage, was heavily outmatched, and against Brady, any weakness, on offense or defense, is fatal. Mahomes finished the game with only 270 yards, no touchdowns, and two interceptions while barely completing 50% of his passes. Not a normal Mahomes stat line, but then again, he was running for his life it seemed on every play and throwing passes that not even a Madden quarterback could throw.
He was throwing accurate passes 40 yards down the field while being tackled and putting in receivers’ hands in double and triple coverage while being chased by the entire Tampa Bay defensive line, but he seemed to be the only one trying on offense at times. Todd Bowles’ defense made Mahomes look as normal as Mahomes could look, shutting down one of the most potent offenses the game has ever seen.
Tyreek Hill, the Chiefs ultra-speedy wide receiver, had 13 catches for 269 yards and three touchdowns when the Chiefs and Buccaneers played earlier in the season, a 27-24 Chiefs victory. In the Super Bowl, Hill had seven catches for 73 yards and no touchdowns.
All in all, this game was hyped up into a past GOAT versus a future GOAT - Brady versus Mahomes for the crown. And, as usual when the pressure gets high, Brady gets higher. Brady and Gronk solidified their place as the greatest playoffs duo in NFL history, connecting for two more touchdowns.
Brady won his fifth Super Bowl MVP and his seventh ring. No matter the team, no matter the circumstances, no matter the opponent, to be a GOAT is to always find a way to win despite these things, and Brady has shown time and time again that it’s his role, and this seventh ring just made him even more impossible to pass.
