During the month of October, Student Government and Student Health Promotion are responsible for running a food drive and encouraging students and staff to donate non-perishable items. All of the donations that are collected during the food drive are going to the Sycamore Pantry, which is located in the Student Recreation Center.
Kelly Barber, the Director of Health and Wellness for SGA, was asked why she decided to have the food drive this year. She stated, “I wanted to collaborate with Student Health Promotion in order to better help students who might be suffering from food disparity.”
The Food Drive started at the beginning of October and will run to the end of the month. The Food Drive has already received many items that have been donated by different organizations. Other organizations have reached out to Student Government and Student Health Promotion about donating items as well. Student Government and Student Health Promotion are very pleased so far with the collection of items that they have received.
Some of the food and items still needed for the Food Drive include any nonperishable food such as Rice and Grain items, Canned fruits and veggies, canned soup, canned protein (Tuna), Canned sauces (Tomato, Alfredo), To-Go snacks such as Oatmeal packets, Crackers, Granola Bars and Mac and Cheese. Along with collected food and snacks, they are also taking items such as menstrual products, hygiene products and school supplies. Donating items is a chance for students to feel good and give back to their ISU community.
People donating items are helping to provide for the students who are less fortunate and may not have the funds for food and personal items.
Donations can be dropped off in the SGA office on the 6th floor of the HMSU any weekday from noon to 4 P.M.
