The Indiana State football team will have to be prepared this Saturday as they will host 2-0 South Dakota State University. The last time these two teams met was in 2019 when the Sycamores fell at home 42-23 to SDSU.
This will be the 11th meeting between ISU and the Jackrabbits. The series between the two dates as far back as 2008 when SDSU joined the same conference as ISU. Indiana State has lost the last six competitions with South Dakota State.
A win over the Jackrabbits would be a quality one just because they have defeated an FBS team and were a runner-up for the FCS championship last season.
In Indiana State’s matchup with South Dakota State last season Kurt Wilderman led in passing with 196 yards. Running back Peter Kerlegrand led in rushing with 107 yards. Both of these players still are on the active roster. South Dakota State’s standouts last season were quarterback J’Bore Gibbs and running back Pierre Strong.
“We’ve seen Pierre the last few years and he’s a great back,” ISU head football coach Curt Mallory stated. “He was tremendous when he first got there and he’s even better now.”
Gibbs and Strong both are returning but Gibbs has not started a game all season. Instead they have quarterback Chris Oladokun who has a 71 passing completion percentage and 395 passing yards so far this year.
Quarterback Anthony Thomas has been starting behind center for ISU. He currently has a 55% completion percentage and 321 passing yards this season. Thompson’s biggest game was in his hometown against Northwestern, where he had 132 passing yards.
Defensively for the Jackrabbits linebacker Adam Bock is leading this season in tackles with 11. Safety Isaiah Stalbird trails right behind him with 10 total tackles this year.
Defensively for the Sycamores safety Michael Thomas leads with 21 total tackles and two interceptions this season.
Indiana State’s game against South Dakota State is Saturday at 1 pm at Memorial stadium in Terre Haute.
Editor's note: An earlier version of this story incorrectly stated the day of the game. The game is Saturday, Sept. 25.
