After three years of being dormant, a few dedicated ISU sycamores have taken it upon themselves to resurrect the Student Veterans Association, also known as SVA. Although there is a resource center for student veterans on campus, current SVA President Tressie Gaskins and Vice President William Caldero felt there was need for an organization that allowed student veterans to meet others who have similar life experiences.

The SVA is still in its growth stage, but the execs plan on having monthly meetings and free coffee! A bonus that is always eagerly accepted. The meetings will be held in or near the Veterans Resource Center, which is in the technology building, room 107. They are currently sending out emails to known student veterans in order to gauge interest, but anyone who is interested can either go to the Veterans Resource Center or email Tessie Gaskins at Once the organization is up and running, sycamores will be able to join via Treehouse. Treehouse is a website specifically for student organizations that can be accessed through the ISU portal.

The goal of the SVA is to allow student veterans to more easily transition back into civilian life by connecting with other people who are going through the same things or maybe already have and can give advice. The student veteran population is a diverse group on campus, but that means that there is even more of a need to connect with likeminded people.

Even though the organization is called the Student Veterans Association, other students are welcome. You can be currently in the military, have parents in the military, or even interested in the military. There are very few requirements to be in this organization; all are welcome.

The SVA is planning lots of upcoming events once they get up and running. They will be participating in both the Homecoming parade and the Veterans Day parade. Although this is more than a few months away, the SVA is also planning a blood drive on Valentine’s Day! For now, make sure to look out this week and the next, when SVA will be giving out free Indiana State Veterans T-shirts for Homecoming.
