The Indiana State Men’s basketball team had an upset victory as they were victorious over the Northern Iowa Panthers last night. The Sycamores were coming off a three-game losing streak and the Panthers were coming off a loss to Loyola Chicago. As Northern Iowa was coming into this game being number one in the Missouri Valley Conference, the Sycamores came out firing as they led all of the first half. Jake Laravia was the leader all night going 8 for 12 with 18 points and seven rebounds while AJ Green was the leader for the Panthers with going 6 for 14 with 4 of 8 from three-point land. Indiana State, especially in the first half, was going inside the paint instead of taking the three-point shots, That all changed in the second half with the Sycamores almost having a 20 point lead at the half.
The Sycamores came out with three three-point shots in a row in the second half trying to keep that 20 point lead going until halfway through the second half. The team struggled to defend AJ Green on the outside and forward Austin Phyfe in the paint and the lead went to single digits. It was anyone’s game in the closing minutes until a key block and layup by Jake Laravia and great defense by Tre Williams sealed the win for the Sycamores.
The Sycamores are now 12-1 at the Hulman center with a record of 15-11 overall.
The Sycamores will travel to Evansville to take on the 9-19 Purple Aces on Sunday at 2 PM
