The Indiana State Baseball team took on Elon in the Sycamore's first weekend series of the 2020 season. ISU used the weekend as a jumping point to revitalize the team which had fallen to 2-5 through February.
A low scoring 3-0 shutout resulted in a Sycamore’s win Friday against the Elon Phoenix. It was close call in the first 4 innings until junior Brian Fuentes ran a double run in the 5th inning resulting in redshirt junior Jordan Schaffer stealing home. Later in the 6th inning, Jordan would have an up the middle field hit for a single run resulting in freshman Grant Magill to run towards home. Jordan would hit again in the 8th inning, he would hit a fly out towards center field causing redshirt senior Brandt Nowaskie to fly towards home base, resulting in a 3-0 score.
Schaffer ended the day with 4 AB resulting in a .750 BA, with 3 hits, 2 RBI’s, and one run.
The second game of the tripleheader was taken place on February 29, at Elon again winning the second game of the triple-header 9-6. The highlight of the game was Schaffer setting a career-high with 4 hits in the win. After the first inning, Elon was up 2-0, until the top of the third inning Indiana State tied 2-2 and when junior Miguel Rivera came up to bat and hit a homer into the left-field making the score 5-2. Elon would score at the bottom of the third inning making it 5-3 but ISU would score three more points on top of the 4th inning making it 8-3 until Elon scored again bottom of the 4th making it 8-4. No one would score until the top of the 7th inning. ISU ended up winning 9-6.
Schaffer ended up with 5 AB, with 4 hits making it a career-high for him, 3 runs, and an .800 BA.
The final game to the triple-header taken place on March 1st, ISU would sweep up the weekend with a 6-2 win over Elon. After 4, hard-fought innings the score would be 4-1 with ISU leading. There wouldn’t be another score until the bottom of the 8th inning from Elon to make the score 4-2. Elon just had to stop ISU on the top of the 9th inning to make a chance to win but failed to do so when Fuentes hit a two-run sweep to get ISU two more points making the score 6-2.
Rivera went 3 for 5 on the day also running in one run in the process.
The Sycamores are now 5-5 this season and will play tomorrow in the first home game of the season. The game will be at Bob Warn Field against the 9-2 University of San Diego Toreros at 3 P.M.
