The Indianapolis Colts came into Arrow Head Stadium as 11 point underdogs but left victorious Sunday night. The Colts were led by a run game that could not be stopped and a defense that looked like it was made up of the NFL's best.
The Chiefs took off to start the game. Driving down the field like they were expected to do. The only thing that kept KC out of the end-zone was a couple of red-zone penalties that snuffed out the Chief drive. The Chiefs finished with a field goal that made the score 3-0. The Colts answered back while also showing that the run game, behind running back Marlon Mack, would be Indy’s game plan. Jacoby Brissett would find the end zone by himself on a one-yard scramble for six. Then, the highlight of the game for both teams happened as quart back Patrick Mahomes did his best Houdini impression by evading a sack and throwing a 27-yard dart into the end zone for a touchdown. The Colts were able to drive down the field 61 yards to kick a field goal and tie the game. After a Chiefs punt, the Colts looked to take the lead, but that plan was ended by defensive back Tyran Mathieu who had an athletic interception that was returned to the Kansas City 37 yard line. The Colts defense did not allow a score off of the turnover but instead, they were able to force a fumbled that would be recovered by rookie linebacker Bobby Okereke. Both teams would go on to exchange punts leaving one minute and forty-four seconds left for the Colts to drive down and kick a field goal with ten seconds on the clock. The Chiefs would then kneel the ball ending the first half 13-10 in the Colts favor.
The Colts received the ensuing second-half kickoff but they were forced to punt. Both teams would punt twice to start the second half. The Colts would call upon kicker Adam Vinatieri for the third time in the game and he would come through with a 31 yard field goal to put his team up 16-13. The Colts followed up their scoring drive with a defensive stand that resulted in a turnover on downs. The Colts capitalized on good field position and scored another field goal from Vinatieri. Kansas City, down 9 with two minutes left in the game, needed to score twice in order to win. The Chiefs offense drove down and kicked a field goal with one minute remaining. After an unsuccessful onside kick, the Colts were able to kneel the ball and steal a victory in a very difficult venue to win football games.
The Colts run game was the deciding factor as Mack rushed for 132 yards on 29 carries along with another 49 yards from other Colts players. Brissett passed for a modest 151 yards on 18 of 29 passing. He did throw a rare interception but made up for it by rushing for a touchdown. In his homecoming game defensive linemen, Justin Houston did his part but not only having a sack but also having the game-sealing tackle for loss resulting in a turnover on downs.
Indianapolis goes into next week on a much-needed bye. They will use this as a chance to gain back so much needed depth via both linebacker Darius Leonard and safety Malik Hooker. The Colts will play at home the following week against division rival Houston Texans.
