Modified Build-a-Bear

Every semester is the Build-a-Bear semester for ISU students, but with the pandemic raising cases every day, students seemed skeptical about whether they would have the event or not.

Multicultural Services & Programs with their resource centers on the 7th floor of Hulman Student Memorial Union are famous or their diverse events that serve minority students on campus. One of their biggest events each semester is Build-a-Bear with more than 100 student turnouts.

While everybody was wondering what would happen to Build-a-Bear this year, the MSP team was brainstorming various ways to provide students their favorite event.

On Friday, October 7, the International Students Resource Center of MSP hosted their event outside HMSU, at the Dede Plaza.

With the pandemic, the event had to be modified to follow safety guidelines. Students were required to pre-register for the events and choose their soft toys beforehand.

On September 17, Martha Reed, the Program Coordinator at MSP sent out an email attached with a survey to all the students who attended their events previously. After students completed the survey, they received a ticket.

Each ticket had a timing for students, so they did not form a crowd around the area. Students were able to pick a certain time frame where they could go, show their e-tickets, and receive their soft toys. Masks and social distancing were mandated.

Duaa Malibari, the Graduate Assistant for International Students Resource Center, said “Organizing this event was tough. We had to package each soft toy according to the choice of students then check if we have the correct information. It took us two weeks of work to make this happen”.

Usually, if the soft toys were available, students could come in and pick their soft toys and make them right then and there. But due to the pandemic, the registration was limited to the first 100 students. Malibari informed 103 students registered for the event.

ISRC hosts many other events focusing on international students like Power On, International House Party, Build-a-Bear, etc.
