Indiana native Sherard Clinkscales ended up at ISU because of his love for the Hoosier state. After he found a job opening for the position of director of athletics at Indiana State University, he saw the opportunity to return to his home state and he took it.
“Being indigenous to Indiana, when I was at N.C. State and I saw the opportunity to move back here, I thought it was a really good opportunity to be able to be back home and to elevate the competitive bar for athletics,” said Clinkscales. “The opportunity to do that and to be back home and of course to work with Dr. Bradley really got me excited about the opportunity.”
While the opportunity to work for ISU and live in his home state once again is what drew him to the position, his favorite thing about Indiana State is the people. “The students on campus and the people that work on the campus are good people. They’re genuine. They care about the university and how we provide service to the community of Terre Haute.”
Being director of athletics of ISU was not his original career goal. “My exact area of study was history. I thought I would either go to law school or I would be a professor. I got my undergrad in history from Purdue and I got my master’s in sports management from N.C. State.”
Despite his current job not being what he first set out to do as an undergraduate, he loves his position at ISU. He said he has a hard time picking a favorite part of his job since there are many things he enjoys about his position. “I like to see the culmination of the hard work that our student athletes, coaches, and administrators put in to help us be successful.”
In his free time, Clinkscales loves outdoor activities such as fishing, golfing, and riding his bike down the Heritage Trail.
The athletes of Indiana State, along with the rest of the students and staff, can rest easy knowing that a proud Hoosier and Sycamore is in charge of keeping the Athletics Department running smoothly.
